Muay Thai Training Camps - Thailand

So you want to learn Muay Thai?

As Mixed Martial Arts gains popularity, more men and women are beginning to train in this physically demanding sport. To be a true Mixed Martial Artist, you must learn many forms of fighting styles, such as jiu jitsu, Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, Karate and Muay Thai Kick Boxing.

Muay Thai in Thailand

Muay Thai Kickboxing has become a forerunner in hand and feet striking, as well as viscous knee and elbow attacks. The speed and power of a kick delivered from a well-well-knowntrained Muay Thai Fighter is a force to be reckoned with in the ring or octagon.

Tour in Smile Thailand Present Muay Thai Training Camps - Thailand

In Thailand where Muay Thai originated from, disciples of the fighting style begin their fighting careers as early as the age of eight years of age. A person from the Western World may find that a young child fighting in a very violent sport appalling. For Thai boys it is a right of passage and many times a way to support the family economically.

The history associated with Thai Kick Boxing is interwoven within the historical past of the Thai people. A gentle, peace-loving people, for centuries Thais had to protect themselves and their land from violent powers. They developed a method of close, hand-to-hand combat best suited to the type of rough-terrain combat people were fighting. Over time it grew to become a rite of passage for Thai males to take up training in this particular martial art. King Naresuan the Great (1555-1605), among the country's most well known warrior-heroes, is actually believed to have been an excellent boxer himself, and it was he who created Muay Thai a necessary part of military training. Another milestone in the history of Thai Kickboxing was the victory of Nai Khanom Tom over 10 Burmese fighters in 1774. Taken captive after the Thai capital fell in 1767, Nai Khanom Tom was picked to fight in front of the Burmese king. After beating ten of them in a row, he was liberated and went back home a hero.

As the number of mixed martial artist rise in the West, more and more of these western fighters are making the pilgrimage to Thailand to train at the numerous training camps located throughout the land of smiles.

Upon my own visit to Thailand I made it a point to visit several Muay Thai matches, some of the matches I witnessed were a display of highly skilled combatants. The power and the precision of their kicking style was a science into its own. I watched a 12-year-old kick boxer kick harder than most grown western men that I have sparred against. At one point the father of one of the young Thai Fighters jested for me get in the ring and fight his little champion, I preferred to keep my spleen intact and declined the offer, which was a wise choice after watching the ensuing match.

While watching a competition in Koh Samui, the promoters allowed some Australian MMA fighters to perform and exhibition between Muay Thai matches. All the Muay Thai fighters lined the outside of the ring and watched intently as the Australian MMA fighters showed off their fighting styles. There really was no comparison to the regimented and disciplined skill of the Thai Kick Boxers, watching the expression of the Thai Fighters they were not impressed by the display from the Australians. Compared to the Muay Thai Kickboxers the MMA fighters looked cumbersome and slow, the fights seemed more like a brawl you would witness in a country and western bar.

Muay Thai Kickboxing is infused with tradition and history, something the western world lacks. Before each match the Kick boxers perform the traditional Wai Khru or Ram Muay dance that honors the teachers of the fighters. The drums and the Asian style music set the tempo as the fighters both enter the ring and perform their dance in unison. The dance seems to function as a stretching and warm up session before the match as well, and is a delight to watch for the spectators.

With the western MMA fighters flocking to Thailand to study the fighting art of Muay Thai there have been several training camps opening throughout Southeast Asia. TheFighting Camps provide lodging, accommodations and usually meals based on a strict nutritional diet. Many of the camps incorporate Yoga, cardiovascular training and other forms of cross training. Many of the camps do not limit their training just to men; they also train women and children. There has been a sharp increase in the amount of female clients that sign on to train at the Muay Thai Kickboxing camps.

In all my travels throughout Thailand I have never seen such a gracious and humble country and this has been the general statements from those Western Fighters that attended Muay Thai Camps. Some of the fighters from the west have extended their stay indefinitely, after experiencing the rich culture and beauty that Thailand offers.

If you treat the Thai people with respect they will embrace you as family, this is one of the many reasons Thailand is called the Land of Smiles. Be warned though: If you join a Muay Thai training camp in the land of smiles, you may return home with a few teeth missing from that smile.

Cock Fighting in Thailand

Frequent visitors to Thailand would be very surprised to learn that Cock Fighting is actually a very popular 'sport' in the country. There is documentary evidence to show that it was taking place in 1562 but it is believed to have been common for many hundreds of years before that. It is not predominantly a city based activity however and most events are held in the outer suburbs and rural areas in the country's 70+ licensed venues. Illegal events are not unknown.

Cock Fighting was first introduced to Britain by Julius Caesar and very popular until it was made illegal by Queen Victoria in 1845. It still carries on as an illegal activity in many areas. In the USA it has gradually become against the law in each state until the last, Louisiana, banned it in 2008. In Asia however it is extremely popular in most countries and especially in the Philippines where it is almost the national 'sport'. It is more popular than traditional sports like football.

Tour In Thailand in Thailand

Though gambling is illegal in Thailand it still operates in a round about way at Cock Fighting events with money exchanging hands as 'prize' or 'purchase' cash. This is one of the reasons that it is a popular activity. A Cock Fight will attract a large audience and coupled with drink and food on hand it become a day out as well as a very exciting event.

In Thailand Cock Fighting in Thailand

Large amounts of money will exchange hands on such days. With birds exchanging hands for up to 20,000 Thai Baht a time and ticket and 'prize' money it is not unusual for quarter of a million Baht to be made. Fights will take place all day and birds and their trainers move from venue to venue. Birds will even be taken over borders to neighbouring countries to take part in fights. Such birds had their own passports including photo and health certificate. During the bird flu epidemic in 2004 such activities were held up as a cause and a temporary ban placed on the movement of birds. Many birds had to be slaughtered and it was an economic disaster who earned their living by fighting cocks. Prior to the bird flu there was estimated to be 30 million fighting cocks in Thailand.

Today some people make their entire living in the fighting cock market. Birds are bred, housed, trained and sold. There is even quite a lucrative market in the export of birds which is reputed to make something in the region of a million Baht annually.

Cock Fighting is only legally allowed to take place on Sundays in Thailand. There have long been efforts to try and have the law relaxed but the judiciary are holding strong. The 'sport' is showing a resurgence in Thailand with International events being staged and even an attempt to make the 'sport' more 'humane'. In legal fights in Thailand the birds wear 'boxing gloves' to cover their spurs unlike other countries where the spurs are enhanced with blades.

Eating Bat Thailand - www.thailandgek.nl Tube.

Duration : 3.07 Mins.

www.thailandgek.nl www.thailand.eigenstart.nl The latest Batman film has been thrilling movie fans across the world, yet the only stir bats are causing in a remote village in Thailand's northeastern province of Kalasin is in a cooking pot. Let's find out more in this report from AP. Even though work in the paddy fields of this small village in Kalasin means hard toil, the elders of Baan Toom Village have their compensation -- in the form of an abundance of free flying food. When these farmers want something different for dinner they leave their rice seedlings, grab a net and a long pole and go... bat-hunting. Their regular hunting ground is the area's sugar-palm trees. Before the bat traps are laid, a village elder chants a prayer asking the bats' forgiveness for the fate awaiting them. The sleeping bats are taken by surprise when the net crashes into the canopy of the trees and they fall into the waiting net. They call this species of bat "kangkhao noo" or "mouse bat" because of its small size. They look as if they'd make a poor meal, but according to a villager the "mouse bat" tastes very good. Phusanee, villager and bat meat lover said "They're good; fried to a crisp -- they're delicious! Tasty. They do wonders for your libido. If you have them with traditional medicine they boost your performance." The bats are killed by plunging them into boiling water. Once they're dead, they're skinned of their fur and then roasted on a charcoal fire, including their wings and guts ...

Blooms With Meaning - The Symbolism of Flowers in Thailand

In many different cultures, flowers hold special meaning. Giving different types of flowers in different social situations can carry a significant meaning to both the person giving the flowers as well as the recipient of the flowers. In addition to the types of flowers, different colored flowers can also carry with them a different meaning. What's more, the meaning of flowers in Thailand can carry with it a significantly different meaning than those in other parts of the world. For instance, in the United States, white flowers are common to celebrate weddings and births while in Thailand white flowers are given in funerals.

Many flowers carry a common symbolic mean in Thailand. Roses in general are symbolic of love, but the color of the rose can carry a different meaning. Red roses are often associated with romantic love while yellow roses are associated with platonic love or friendship. Chrysanthemums and Daisies are given as a sign of friendship and happiness.

Tour In Thailand in Thailand

Some flowers have double meanings. For instance, the lilac can mean both love and the absence of passion. The peony can mean both a happy marriage as well as shame. The petunia can represent both a soothing presence as well as a presence that invokes anger. The gladioli can symbolize both the need for a break from a relationship as well as sincerity.

Smile Thailand Blooms With Meaning - The Symbolism of Flowers in Thailand

However, selecting the right blooms can carry special significance and endear the recipient to you.

Teachers' Day in Thailand

Since 1957, Thailand has been celebrating the Teachers' Day to honor educators and facilitators of learning across the country. Every year on January 16, Teachers' Day is celebrated across Thailand.

In 1956, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram, was also the Honorary Chairman of Board of Directors of the Teachers' Council. He addressed the teachers throughout the country, he said that the teachers play a dominant role in molding a student's life and therefore, students should love and respect their teachers. And he also suggested that the teachers should have a day of their own and it should be used as an opportunity by the students to pay respect and homage to their teachers.

Tour In Thailand in Thailand

It was Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram who started the concept of Teachers' Day in Thailand. He felt that the Thai people celebrated many auspicious days to pay tribute to their living and dead relatives. However, there was no day set aside for teachers who were paid the same respect as parents.

Smile Thailand Teachers' Day in Thailand

After this speech, many teachers agreed with what Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram had to say. They felt that a day should be set aside when they are remembered and honored for their role in building and making wise and responsible citizens. Thus, the same year, that is 1956, the Teachers' Council unanimously agreed to set up Teachers' Day and the cabinet passed a resolution announcing January 16 as Teachers' Day. The first Teachers' Day in Thailand was celebrated in 1957 and it was declared as a national holiday in Thailand. On this day students perform religious activities and wish happiness to their teachers for the rest of the year.

As per Buddhist traditions, teachers are as important as parents, if not more. Teachers' Day is used as an opportunity to reinforce this and show gratitude to teachers for their work and teachings.

Thailand Communication and Culture - What to Do When You Meet Thai People

If you are going to visit Thailand or meet with Thai people, you may wonder what to do to make a good impression. Thailand communication technique should be used so that you can converse with them amicably. Here are some of the tips that you can use including:

1 Say Hello in Thai:

Muay Thai in Thailand

Thai people use Sawad Dee as greeting words. If you are male, put Krub at the end of your sentence. If you are a female, put Ka instead. So, you can practice saying Sawas Dee Krub or Sawad Dee Ka now. The people you say to will say back the same thing. When you say this, you can nod your head a little to make your gesture even friendlier.

Tour in Smile Thailand Present Thailand Communication and Culture - What to Do When You Meet Thai People

2 Do the famous "Wai":

This gesture can be done by putting your palms together in a prayer-like manner and bow slightly. It is customary for the younger or lower in status to begin the greeting with the words Sawad Dee. When taking leave, the same words saying and procedure is repeated. If you are greeted with a Wai from someone, you should reply with the same gesture. You don't have to return a Wai to a small child. Think of a Wai as you would a handshake. You should initiate a Wai with a sincere pleasure at an introduction.

3 Men do not touch women:

Still, Thailand communication and culture is quite conservative when it comes to the treatment between the two sexes. People do not shake hands and they do not touch the opposite sex if it is not necessary. For male, don't be surprised if you offer a handshake to a lady and do not get one back. It is not you but the culture.

There are many things to learn regarding Thailand communication and culture. Some of them may be similar to the western culture but many of them aren't. To learn this take some time but you will be able to understand it in the end.

The Village's bars and restaurants are all open for business and many set up their own stalls to sell some snacks to passing tourists. You are welcome to feast on your street snacks while enjoying a spot of people watching with a cool drink and fine sea views from the local bars.

Smile Thailand Fisherman's Village Walking Street: Koh Samui, Thailand

Shopping opportunities are abound with market stalls and local boutiques selling clothing and locally made trinkets and souvenirs made from local materials such as bamboo, fruit tree woods and, of course, coconuts. Trinkets available to buy include lamps, wooden elephants and Buddha images, paintings, silk cushions and candles to name but a few. Prices can be a little inflated compared to other areas of the island, so don't be afraid to try for a discount.

Local Bophut school serves as a large car park and you can leave your car safely here for a small charge. Care should be taken when driving past the village and crossing the busy roads, especially with children, as they are poorly lit and few drivers slow down while passing this busy area.

Fisherman's Village Walking Street has been such a success that other areas of Koh Samui have followed suit, with Maenam, Lamai and Nathon now hosting their own Walking Street on different days throughout the week.

On your next visit to Koh Samui, don't miss Fisherman's Village Walking Street for a relaxed, satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable evening out.
