Summer is typically the season that everyone thinks of when planning their vacations. But why not dare to be different and take a winter vacation getaway instead? If you are a skier, snowboarder, or just someone who enjoys the winter months, a winter vacation may be just what you have been looking for. There are plenty of spots around the world that make spectacular winter getaways.

Hershey. If you are traveling before or during the Christmas season, consider Hershey, Pennsylvania as your vacation destination. The home of Hershey's candy, Hershey Park becomes home to Christmas Candyland, where over one million Christmas lights are put on display. Christmas Candyland typically runs for a month prior to Christmas.

Sweden. Located in the small riverside village of Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, Sweden's Ice Hotel is famous worldwide for great winter vacations. The hotel is created each winter out of 10,000 tons of ice from the nearby river and 30,000 tons of snow. The hotel features the famous Absolut Ice Bar, a winter favorite for the 21+ crowd.

Yellowstone. During the winter the Yellowstone National Park, a popular summer destination in the United States, offers Lodging and Learning programs where guests of all ages can stay at Yellowstone and participate in educational lessons during the winter. Not only will the parks and restaurants be less crowded than during summer or a school vacation week, but you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather during your stay.

Caribbean. Why not take a cruise during the winter months? Like Florida, a Caribbean cruise offers a change of pace from the snowy, cold winter months that you may be used to. Winter is typically a perfect time for a cruise because the weather in the Caribbean has calmed down. Summer is hurricane season, spelling trouble for cruises but winter is perfect for calm seas and a relaxing cruise.

Mont Tremblant. Located in the spectacular Laurentian Mountains of the Canadian province of Quebec, Mont Tremblant offers its visitors over 600 acres of land for skiing and snowboarding. Perhaps the best choice if you are looking to take to the slopes, keep in mind that the US dollar is worth more in Canada and can go further than it would on a vacation in the United States.

Alaska. If you are traveling with children, Alaska may be the perfect vacation choice for you. Offering everything from dog sledding, one of Alaska's most popular sports, to viewing the Northern lights, Alaska is one of the best winter vacation destinations. Although it is notorious for its cold, wintry weather, Alaska also holds a number of entertainment options that are likely to keep the whole family busy.

Lake Tahoe. For decades Lake Tahoe has been one of the top winter vacation destinations in the world. Located on the border of Nevada and California just west of Carson City, Nevada, you will find that Lake Tahoe has plenty of activities for everyone in the family. Lake Tahoe averages 360 inches of snow each year, making for a winter wonderland of fun on your winter vacation. There are a number of high quality resorts around picturesque Lake Tahoe and the Rocky Mountains make a fabulous backdrop for the perfect getaway.

Winter Vacations - Warm Weather Destinations

Do you need a break from the cold? If you need to thaw out then consider taking a vacation to a warm weather destination. You will return tan, refreshed and ready to brave the rest of the winter. Here are some suggestions for taking a winter holiday.

First off, you need to decide how long you can get away and how much travel you want to do. Since most of the U.S. is cold in winter you'll have to go south to find warm weather. If you only have a few days then it makes sense to keep your winter trip close to home since you don't want to spend a large part of your holiday on a plane.

Consider visiting southern Florida which has loads of options and tropical weather throughout the winter. Miami is fantastic for visiting the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the nightlife of South Beach. If you want a slower pace and fewer crowds, consider the Florida Keys. Key West is a quaint city full of bed and breakfasts with plenty to do for the entire family including water sports and nightlife.

A bit farther (but not by much) is the Caribbean. You'll need a passport and the flights are more expensive but it is well worth it. There are tons of tropical islands from which to choose and there are French, Dutch, British, Latin and other influences to give you some culture. The Dominican Republic is know for its inexpensive all inclusive resorts; included in the packages is accommodation, food, transfers and water sports.

If you have more time and money then consider taking a winter vacation in the Southern Hemisphere which is summer during the U.S.' winter. Rio de Janeiro has the world famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana with Sugar Loaf as a rugged mountain backdrop. Since Rio is a large city, it boasts five star hotels, fine dining and many nightlife options. Another holiday destination south of the equator is Australia. The Gold Coast is full of sun and sand options and the cities of Sydney and Melbourne have a European feel. If you're up for some adventure then visit the interior and explore the outback.

Southeast Asia is a popular destination due to its affordability and richness in culture. Singapore is not only full of sights, luxury hotels and culture but it is known for being a very clean country. Malaysia has many white sand beaches and islands with accommodations ranging from simple bungalows to lavish resorts. Thailand is another country brimming with ancient sights and gorgeous beaches and its people are known for their hospitality.

If you need to find some warm weather then there are many options for winter vacations. Take lots of pictures and don't forget your sunscreen!

Top Ten Things to Do in Calgary This Winter

When winter's winds blow it isn't all that tempting to go out and explore a city, but in Calgary there is so much to do that it becomes difficult to stay indoors!

Of course not all of the city's top ten activities take place in the great and snowy outdoors, but they are all the more enjoyable because of the seasonal conditions. From January through March all of Calgary is bursting at the seams with great activities, and among the most preferred are:

1. Fireside dining - you don't have to stay at home to enjoy a cozy meal beside the fire. There are many restaurants in Calgary that serve hearty fare in spaces gently lit and warmed by large fireplaces. Some have scenic views and park settings, while others are set on the areas lakes or rivers. Try such restaurants as the Q Haute, The Ranche, Newport Grill and River Café.

2. Salsa Dancing - there are literally dozens of dancing classes and schools in the city focusing on the highly active ballroom dance style known as salsa. It is a great way to really stay fit during the long winter months.

3. Get out on the ice - Calgary has some great skating rinks, including the Olympic Plaza and Westside Recreation Center, as well as several others. A few, such as the Westside, are indoors and also offer full fitness facilities including a track and aquatic center.

4. Museum, museums, museums! - feel like taking in a museum? Calgary has galleries and museums galore as well as the fantastic Glenbow Museum and the ever popular Telus World of Science where visitors can become human "batteries".

5. Slip sliding away - what is winter without the thrill of sledding? Calgary has dozens of great sliding and tobogganing hills, and most offer good parking and free runs. Check out Edworthy Park, Confederation Park, Deerfoot Athletic Park, Rundle Dry Pond, Canyon Meadows, Stanley Park, Elliston Park and the Fish Creek Escarpment.

6. The National Pastime - hockey is definitely one of Canada's dominant sports and the Pengrowth Saddledome is the official home of the Calgary Flames Hockey Club. The award winning team has an enormous fan following, but tickets can usually be found for upcoming games.

7. Skiing - Alberta is chock full of world class skiing, with some less than three hours from Calgary. There is also the Canada Olympic Park for skiing and snowboarding as well.

8. Festivals - the winter months are not shy on festivals, and some of the city's favorite events take place between January and March. There is the Calgary Fringe Festival, the 0 Film Festival, the Calgary Winter Festival and Zoolights among many others.

9. Cocoon - why not take in an on demand video or hop out for a quick video rental, order up some take-away food and nestle down in the warmth and coziness of the sofa or, even better, the bed.

10. Pretend that winter is gone - Calgary has two large greenhouses that make it easy to forget that winter is even occurring. The Calgary Zoo Botanical Garden and the Devonian Gardens are excellent cold weather escapes!
