Joint Locking

Being a martial artist means being able to handle self-defense situations in an efficient manner. You practice, to gain skill.

Many intermediate martial artists believe they can rely on just one or two martial-arts skills. It takes a seasoned martial practitioner to realize the need to be well-rounded in the arts. You have to perfect long-range kicks, close-in punching, elbows, weapons, pressure points, and ... joint locking.

A Practical and Easy Way to Understand Joint Locking

Tour in Smile Thailand Present Joint Locking

Wrist and joint locks are used to control an attacker in a fight. They can be used to trap -- for hand immobilization.

You hinder in one hand, while the other hand hits.

Here's a way for you to get the idea behind joint locking:

Either grab your own middle finger, or grab the finger of a willing practice partner. Be careful -- you are just experimenting. You don't want to hurt yourself or your partner.

Grab the middle finger in your fist and slowly bend the finger backward -- very slowly. Bend it toward the back of your own wrist or the wrist of your partner, if you have a willing participant.

Bend the finger slowly, until the bending causes pain.

In its simplest form, this is a joint lock.

Now, let's adapt this finger lock to an actual wrist lock:

Grab a friend.

Start from a handshake position. But instead of reaching in for a thumb -to-thumb strong handshake, grab a hold of your partner's hand early.

In other words, grab your partner's hand around the fingers. Turn your partner's hand palm up. And try to keep his (or her) arm straight -- extended, so the elbow is straight.

Now, bend the fingers, which should be pointed toward the ground, toward your partner's body.

Note: Remember to be careful. Slowly, please. And stop when your partner feels pain ... or raises to a tiptoe position.

And that is a first-class, "A," Number One, wrist lock.

Of course, you probably won't want to joint lock every person you handshake. Not a good way to make acquaintances.

Still, this is a very useful lock with lots of applications. Practical applications.

Practice until you can snap on that particular lock smoothly and efficiently.
